RIJK’S Pinotage Syrah 2015. It is a blend of 60% Pinotage and 40% Syrah. It has been aged in 50% new oak and 50% second fill in 250 liter barrels. It is in the barrels for 12 to 15 months.
When I tasted this I got a little bit of herbaciousness, some white pepper and mulberry. It was really well balanced.
This is the first wine that really grabbed my attention this year. It took me by surprise – it’s been my favorite wine of the year. What surprised me, was being from Tulbagh the Syrah that I picked up was a more cool client Syrah. When I investigated a bit further I found that the Syrah vineyard is planted higher on the mountain which experiences some snow – which explains the cool climate taste.
I cannot recommend this red wine enough!
